It is in our nature as humans and as Miami Hurricanes to seek ways to give back.
More than 250 University of Miami students gathered for a day of hurricane relief organized by the Butler Center for Service and Leadership. With the support of the Department of Student Life, Office of the President, Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Government and Community Relations, students fanned out across nine locations throughout South Florida to clean up debris, restock emergency supply warehouses, and provided aid to a community dusting itself off from Hurricane Irma two weeks ago.
“A disaster creates a crisis,” said President Frenk addressing a crowd of volunteers on the Coral Gables campus last Friday morning, “but it also brings out the best of people.”
In the same breath, the president deplored the destruction caused by Hurricane Irma at the university, in the Miami community and in the Caribbean. He noted the psychological importance of “getting back to normal,” while addressing the recent earthquakes in his native Mexico.
