The mission of the University of Miami Black Alumni Society is to facilitate a comprehensive network among University alumni, students, faculty, staff, family, and friends to advance the interests and needs of our community and promotes the rich history of Black alumni at the University.
The University of Miami Black Alumni Society (UMBAS) is an official affiliate group of the University of Miami Alumni Association that is committed to enhancing the University experience for African American, African, Black non-African-descent, Black Caribbean and Black Latin University of Miami alumni and students.
The University of Miami Black Alumni Society was established in 1989 by a group of dedicated alumni who identified a need to continue nurturing the success of the Black community within and beyond the University. Several educational forums, a viable professional network, the advancement of student and alumni interests, and scholarship funding can be attributed to the efforts of the UMBAS.
The University of Miami Black Alumni Society commemorates Juneteenth in this virtual gathering. Exploring the multifaceted legacy of our ancestors, our communities, and how we can document our own stories for future generations.
Today more than ever, University of Miami students of all backgrounds rely on those who have gone before them to help make their academic aspirations come true. Eighty percent of the University’s students receive some financial aid, with 43 percent on either need-based or merit scholarships. Even so, many talented Black students are forced to drop out of college in their junior or senior years because they are unable to afford tuition and fees. The Black Alumni Society Scholarship is funded each year by contributions from alumni and friends, and awarded to eligible student applicants. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, the Black Alumni Society has been able to offer this scholarship for more than 20 years.Society Initiatives
The University of Miami is committed to ensuring access to the highest quality education and to attract the most talented students by expanding undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Contributions to these scholarships offer need-based financial support and recognize the academic accomplishments of underrepresented students and students of color enrolled at the U.
Because of your generous contributions, the Black Alumni Society Scholarship has awarded more than $48,000 to 200 students since 1999. Founded in 1989, this scholarship fosters the success of the Black community on our campus and continues to bridge the gap for deserving students to complete their degrees at UM.
