Joseph J. Avery, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at the University of Miami Herbert Business School. Avery has additional appointments in the University’s Department of Psychology and its Institute for Data Science and Computing, and he is an Affiliated Fellow at Yale Law School’s Information Society Project. Avery’s research interests are at the intersection of business, law, and artificial intelligence.
His scholarship has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals as well as top law reviews. Prior to joining Miami’s faculty, Avery received a Ph.D. from Princeton University and a J.D. from Columbia Law School. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale Law School. Beyond academia, Dr. Avery has practiced law, co-created an artificial legal intelligence named Claudius, and co-founded a National Science Foundation-supported legal technology company.
